Creating Content for Small Business Owners

Out of all the things I help female business owners with – THIS is the one that leaves us feeling like we’re constantly chasing our tails and panic-posting pictures of our breakfast because we have no idea what we’re going to talk about on social media today!

But creating quality content is not only essential but also a powerful tool for female business owners to establish your brand, connect with your audience, and boost business growth. In today’s digital age, where we KNOW attention spans are shorter than ever (how many cakes being iced videos have you watched lately?), it’s crucial to create content that stands out and captivates your ideal audience.

So – here are a few of my top tips to help!

Know Why You’re Posting

Seriously – before anything makes it to your feed, know what the point of the post is. Are you building Know, Like, Trust? Is it a sales post? Are you educating? Is it a strategically placed engagement post just before a sales post? Posting willy-nilly isn’t a plan – have a reason that every post is there and know what its value is to you.

Quality Over Quantity

While I entirely believe this to be true, this will mean different things to different businesses and audiences. For some businesses, quality will mean gorgeous images and videos, others will be educational and informative. It’s so, so important that you know your audience and what they want to see from you! Which leads me nicely to…

Understand Your Audience

To create content that actually resonates, you must have a deep understanding of your ideal clients. Know that to sell to your audience, you need to solve their problems, their pain points. Make sure you know what they are! Research their interests and preferences. What are their aspirations and goals? Knowing this means that you can tailor your content to address their specific needs and desires. If you’ve never done my course on Finding your Ideal Client, it’s available in Business Club.

Incorporate Storytelling

Storytelling is a powerful tool that can captivate your audience and evoke emotions – which is the pinnacle of advertising! Share stories about your business journey, the challenges you’ve faced, and the successes you’ve achieved. Highlight the experiences of your customers and how your products or services have positively impacted their lives. Personal anecdotes and narratives can create a genuine connection with your audience, making your content more relatable and memorable. Stories are EVERYTHING – you’re allowed to post a (non-panic) picture of your breakfast if you’ve got a story going on with it!

Engage with Visuals

Visual content is highly effective in grabbing attention and conveying information quickly. Incorporate eye-catching images, videos, and infographics into your blog posts, social media updates, and website. Visuals not only enhance the overall appeal of your content but also make it more shareable and memorable. Consider using tools like Canva or Adobe Spark to create stunning visuals that align with your brand’s aesthetic. There’s lots of Canva training again in Business Club. (In fact, the 2 things I suggest business owners invest in early in their business, before websites and accountancy software, are Canva Pro* and SocialBee*! Best tools ever!)

Diversify Your Channels

Again, it’s important that this is done with a plan! You cannot be healthily active on all social media channels and maintain consistency! If you haven’t I recommend claiming your handle on all of them and then creating a banner or post telling your clients where you hang out the most. Then leave that platform alone until you have time and headspace to deal with it properly (if ever!!) But, when I talk about diversifying your channels – I don’t just mean social media!

Don’t limit yourself to a single platform or content format. Explore various channels to reach a wider audience and engage with them in different ways. Social media platforms like Instagram, LinkedIn, or TikTok allow you to share visuals, short videos, and stories. Consider running Facebook Lives or hosting webinars or podcasts to provide in-depth insights and foster a sense of community among your audience. Use email – I’ll stand by the stats that show that emails are the channel that converts to sales better than others! By diversifying your content strategy, you can effectively reach different segments of your target market and maximize your brand exposure.

Incorporate SEO Strategies

SEO is short for Search Engine Optimisation. To ensure that your content reaches the right audience, it’s essential to optimise it for search engines like Google and Bing. Conduct keyword research using something like Google’s Keyword Planner to find the relevant search terms that your target audience uses – or ask them! Specifically, find out what they would type into Google to find your content. Incorporate these keywords naturally throughout your content, including in your headings, subheadings, and meta descriptions. Additionally, focus on creating content that provides value and answers to questions your audience is likely to ask. This approach will not only improve your search engine rankings but also attract organic traffic to your website.

By implementing some of these strategies, you start building up content that resonates with your audience and grows your business’s online presence. Remember throughout all of this – consistency is key. Stay committed to producing quality content that aligns with your brand values and speaks to the aspirations and challenges of your target market. It will take time and dedication – and a genuine passion for your own business success, but your content can become a powerful tool for growth and success.
